Rites of Christian Initiation for Adults (R.C.I.A)
The Sacraments of Initiation in the Catholic Church are Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Eucharist.
Children receive these same sacraments in stages; adults receive them within one ceremony at the Easter Vigil Mass. This order of prayer and preparation satisfies the needs of many:
- Adults who are baptized, may receive instruction to prepare themselves for the reception of Confirmation and Holy Communion.
- Unbaptized adults need to receive instruction for the reception of all three Sacraments of Initiation, which are celebrated during the Easter Vigil.
- Catholics who are only baptized who wish to receive Holy Communion and Confirmation; instruction is given in the parish RCIA program, and the celebration of the Sacraments are at the Cathedral Basilica on Pentecost Sunday each year.
Catechumens (those not yet baptized) and Candidates for Profession of Faith (those already baptized in another Christian denomination) are instructed in Catholic doctrine and practice. This enables them to better discern the call of God to the conversion of life. RCIA Sessions begin upon request. Classes generally run September through June, and on a weekly or bi‐weekly basis.
